The New Orleans Advocate has an opening for a full-time Photo Editor / Photographer.
NOTE: This position is a dual position in which candidates are expected to split their time between shooting and editing.General Summary of Position:
As photo editor, the successful candidate will be responsible for daily coverage and advance photo planning. This will be done by working with editors and reporters to create a photo report that represents the culture, diversity, and people of the New Orleans community. The photo editor will be responsible for generating ideas for coverage and assigning topics, events and stories to the photo staff. The photo editor will also mentor part-time and freelance photographers working for The New Orleans Advocate. Organizational and time-management skills a must.
As a photographer, the successful candidate must be a team player who can produce storytelling images under tight deadlines. He or she must possess excellent people skills, a strong work ethic, and a great attitude. Photographers cover general news, features, sports and investigative assignments. The photographer we are looking for must understand lighting and be able to capture the emotions of the subjects they cover. He or she must possess strong fundamentals in photojournalism and be able to work efficiently in deadline situations. The position may require some night and weekend work and applicants must be able to lift and carry between 25 and 40 pounds on a regular basis.
