Freelance Meteorologist


Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Create and anchor daily weather segments using computer graphics
  • Report from the field as required and shoot, write and edit packages
  • Responsible for anchoring newscasts and General Assignment reporting
  • Pitch story ideas to producer/and news director
  • Maintain, transport, and understand how to operate ENG equipment
  • Communicate with reports and photographers about weather story development
  • Respond to breaking severe weather and live shot opportunities
  • Fill in on other shows as needed
  • Participate in community events as a station representative as directed
Required Skills

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: A degree in meteorology or related field is a must. Candidates must have 2-3 years of previous on air experience, the ability to work independently to create accurate weather forecasts and graphics.

CRITICAL COMPETENCIES FOR SUCCESS:

  • Ability to work in a fast and concise manner under pressure with demonstrated ability to present live and ad-lib unscripted reports with continuity, meaning, and clarity
  • Engage viewers as weather anchor
  • Highly proficient in WSI Max Weather system
  • The ability to forecast accurately
  • A working knowledge of ENPS a plus
  • Proficient in newsgathering equipment and computers essential
  • Ability to perform work accurately and thoroughly
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
